A man was victim to voter fraud at the Chavakachcheri Hindu Primary School polling station in Jaffna on Wednesday.

The officials on duty had discovered that someone had illegally cast a vote under another man’s name. Ramanathan, husband of Chavakachcheri Municipal Councilor and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) member Sivamangai Ramanathan, found out that someone had used his name to cast a vote when he visited the polling station.

Sri Lankan police, election officials and party figures are currently investigating the incident. However, voters were affected by the discovery and insisted that “suspicions have arisen” and questioned  “were there widespread masses of vote fraud?”

Earlier today, there were tense scenes outside the Jaffna Central College after a recount was called. Tamil National Alliance (TNA) members engaged in an intra-party battle over preferential votes in a close contest between Sasikala Raviraj and M A Sumanthiran for the party’s seats in the district. This caused major controversy as Raviraj who was on course to finish second in the final vote count, finished fourth and as a result did not win the seat she was on course for.
