Safety reassurances demanded after sword-mob attack at Jaffna College

A protest was staged by students, teachers and staff at Jaffna College of Technology in relation to a sword-wielding incident and called for the necessary precautions to secure their safety to be taken. The demonstration took place yesterday morning (Feb 18) and condemned the actions of the mob whilst demanding that appropriate sanctions be taken against them.

A few days ago, a heated exchange of words between students at the Jaffna College of Technology had occurred due to a conflict between them. This developed into a physical altercation among the two parties. Following this, sword-wielding men escalated the situation after entering the university.

Three teachers were injured as a result of the row and led to one of the sword-wielding men of the mob to be arrested. This incident left students, staff and teachers greatly shaken with fear.

The demonstrators demanded that assurances for their safety were given with placards and banners and called on The Governor of the Northern Province and officials like the Deputy Commissioner of  Police to guarantee their safety.  Some of the placards read “ Perpetrators should be punished” and “Ensure the safety of students.”
