Batticaloa airport to be internationalised

<p>Sri Lanka's Minister of Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation, Prasanna Ranatunga&nbsp;announced that&nbsp;Batticaloa airport is to be developed as an international airport, the&nbsp;Colombo Page reports.&nbsp;</p> <p>Minister Ranatunga said the Indian government has extended&nbsp;its support&nbsp;to develop the airport and was&nbsp;discussed with the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka,&nbsp;Taranjit Singh Sandhu.</p> <p>Batticaloa airport began running domestic flights in 2018&nbsp;after running only military flights for nearly thirty years. Flights&nbsp;operated&nbsp;two years after Sri Lanka's previous President, Maithripala Sirisena, opened it&nbsp;to the public&nbsp;in July 2016 following renovation.&nbsp;</p>
