<p>Sri Lanka's Minister of Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation, Prasanna Ranatunga announced that Batticaloa airport is to be developed as an international airport, the Colombo Page reports. </p>
<p>Minister Ranatunga said the Indian government has extended its support to develop the airport and was discussed with the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.</p>
<p>Batticaloa airport began running domestic flights in 2018 after running only military flights for nearly thirty years. Flights operated two years after Sri Lanka's previous President, Maithripala Sirisena, opened it to the public in July 2016 following renovation. </p>
