Chief Minister of the Northern Province C V Wigneswaran criticised the Sri Lanakn government and Tamil National Alliance for failing to deliver on promises made to the Tamil people, in his final address to the Northern Provincial Council this week.
Shortly before he announced the formation of a new political part, the retired Supreme Court judge said that the Sri Lankan government had failed to uphold its pledge to devolve power to the North-East.
The Hindu reports Wigneswaran as citing “continuing militarisation, recent military-backed Sinhalese settlements in the Tamil-majority province, the emergence of Buddhist shrines, and the inadequacy of funds” as examples of Colombo’s continued intransigence.
“The good governance government (of Sirisena) which came to power in 2015 was no different to the previous governments except some symbolic steps were taken to appease the international community,” he said.
“I stuck to the core Tamil demands – a Tamil nation of merged north and east for a federal administration for which I received an overwhelming mandate.”
The Chief Minister also struck out at the TNA for failing to deliver on promises the party had made to the Tamil people.
