Sri Lankan president oversees meeting of national Buddhist think tank

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena oversaw a meeting of the National Buddhist Think Tank this week, where he pledged his government’s support for a host of new initiatives.

According to the President’s Media Division, this was the 9th time that such a meeting had been held under the patronage of Mr Sirisena. Decisions made at the meeting included support to preserve Buddhist manuscripts at temples across the island, increase resources for Buddhist schools and the publication of a new Buddha Jayanti Tripitaka Series.

Both Sri Lanka’s president and prime minister have repeatedly reassured Buddhist monks that any new constitution for the island will ensure that the religion will continue to hold “foremost” place as is enshrined currently.
