Appearing in court on Thursday to face contempt of court charges, Gnanasara said he worked closely with military intelligence during the war and after the war had ended, giving personal support to officers.

The monk said he helped the intelligence officials to protect the country from separatists, BBC Tamil reports.

Accusing the police of arresting prominent military intelligence officials in connection with disappearance of Prageeth Eknaligoda, Gnanasara said that some in the current Sri Lankan government were working to disrupt military intelligence activities
