Sri Lanka's military approached senior TNA MP Maavai Senathirajah to gather "information" on Sunday night, according to sources in the North-East.
Two men visited the ITAK office at Martin Road in Jaffna on Sunday at around 7:30pm, asking security guards, in Sinhalese, to speak to the MP, who is also the leader of ITAK. As he wasn't in the office, the men waited until his arrival soon after.
Mr Senathirajah refused to give any information to the men, who identified themselves as military intelligence. The MP stated that parliamentary speaker Karu Jayasuriya would need to give permission for the military to question him. The men then said their visit was unofficial and that they did not need to get permission to gather information for the military.
ITAK officials at the office then called the police, who arrived soon after and requested the men to leave.
Sources close to the TNA stalwart disclosed that Mr Senathirajah was reluctant to publicise the incident and tried to cover it up as he was concerned about the relationship the TNA had with the Sri Lankan state and the possible political repercussions.
