Sri Lankan army builds 28 Buddha statues for 'war heroes' in Vanni

The Sri Lankan military has opened a Buddhist site in the Vanni, which contains 28 newly constructed Buddha statues in memory of Sri Lankan soldiers.

The statues, built for “fallen war heroes” according to an official military website, were unveiled in a religious ceremony on Sunday. Buddhist monks and Sri Lankan soldiers chanted prayers, whilst Tamil schoolchildren knelt before a Sri Lankan army commander to receive religious blessings.

The military also conducted a medical clinic at the same location, to mark the opening of the statues at the Sri Thissapura Rajamaha Viharaya.
