Sri Lankan soldier's body exhumed after CID failed to collect evidence

The body of a Sri Lankan soldier who allegedly committed suicide after claiming responsibility for the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, was exhumed this week, after it emerged that the police buried him without taking any fingerprints.

According to reports, the body of former military intelligence officer Ilandarige Edirisinghe Jayamanne was hastily buried in Colombo with Sri Lankan police failing to collect any forensic evidence.

The officer was found last week in his home in Kegalle. Reports indicate that he had hung himself in his kitchen. In a letter found by his body and allegedly written by him, the former officer claims responsibly for the 2009 assassination of the journalist in Colombo. The letter goes on to call for the release of Sri Lankan intelligence officers who are currently being investigated for the murder.
