The European Union will double its development aid to Sri Lanka over the next four years "in support of the government's reconciliation priorities" said a press release this week.
The assistance, totalling €210 million (approximately Rs. 34 billion) for the years up to 2020, will also be used to fund “the resettlement of Internally Displaced People, assisting transitional justice and building local government capacity, as well as supporting development in Sri Lanka's poorest areas”.
The announcement comes following a meeting between the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini and the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was accompanied by the Minister for Law and Order, Sagala Rathnayake.
Amongst the issues discussed was the implementation of last year's UN Human Rights Council Resolution, according to a press release.
“The steps taken so far send a clear signal that the Sri Lankan government is committed to move towards genuine reconciliation and accountability: processes which the European Union will continue to support,” it said.
