India's National Fishworkers' Forum (NFF) on Tuesday urged the central government to ensure the release of Indian fishermen currently incarcerated in Sri Lankan jails before the traditional Tamil festival of Pongal.
“Right now, there are 114 fishermen languishing in various prisons of Sri Lanka and 75 boats were confiscated. Apart from venturing for fishing to earn their livelihood, they have not committed any criminal act. Their boats are deteriorating since no maintenance was undertaken”, the NFF chairperson, M. Elango was quoted by The Hindu as saying in a letter to India's foreign secretary who arrived in Sri Lanka today.
