Students at Jaffna University marked Maaveerar Naal this evening, by lighting a commemorative flame.

The flame was lit at 18:05 local time, the moment when the first LTTE cadre Lt Shankar, died in the struggle on November 27th, 1982.

Candles lit at 18:05 at Jaffna University today.

The ceremony took place amidst an increased Sri Lankan military presence at the university. Anticipating that students would try to mark the day, Sri Lankan security forces and intelligence operatives amassed outside the university and stopped people from entering the premises after around 4pm.

Students escaped through side entrances after they paid their respects, avoiding the military personnel stationed at the main entrance.

Earlier in the day, students, lecturers and other staff of the university lit candles at a makeshift memorial, with a placard paying respects to the fallen LTTE fighters.
