Schoolboy's heartbreaking suicide must open eyes - Tamil political prisoners

Tamil political prisoners have expressed their heartbreak at the suicide of 18 year old Rajeswaran Senthuran, who took his own life in protest at their prolonged detention.

In a statement, the prisoners requested that no more supporters should resort to such tragic measures.

The schoolboys death should resound loudly for the oppressive Sri Lankan government, they said.

The statement further said:

"The selfless decision of the 18-year-old schoolboy to take his own life, for the sake of the everyday lives of us Tamil political prisoners, breaks our heart.

"Sitting in these prisons, we do not now how to begin to console the student's family and the academic community of Jaffna.

"We sincerely ask that no more of our people that love and care for us take such tragic measures.

"We ask instead that you take forward your support and assistance into peacefully fulfilling the honourable Senthuran's dreams of social liberation.

"We bow our heads and mourn for Senthuran's soul to achieve peace, and we share our deepest condolences with the family members and school community that are grieved by his loss.

"However the spirit of Senthuran, whose sacrifice is unmatched in the history of Eelam Tamil political prisoners, must knock loudly on the government's door of oppression. The eyes of the international community must be opened wide. Otherwise, no-one can prevent another tragedy in Sri Lanka after 2009."
