No plans to repeal PTA says Sri Lankan justice minister

Sri Lanka's justice minister, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said the government had no plans to repeal the country's draconian anti-terror legislation, the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), reports the Daily Mirror.

His comments come after the election monitor, CaFFE called for the PTA to be repealed.

The PTA, which has been used by the Sri Lankan government to detain particularly Tamil activists and young men and women without charge indefinitely, has been widely criticised by international NGOs.

Last month, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in its election manifesto, called for all Tamil detainees currently being held under the PTA to be released. See more here.

Mr Rajapakshe said the government would instead start working on the Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance, the National Audit Bill, the Right to Information Bill and the Judicial Protection Bill.
