Sri Lanka rejects UN concerns on sexual violence in conflict

The Sri Lankan government today, rejected UN concerns over sexual violence in conflict on the island, deeming them to be matters of accountability and reconciliation issues that could be solved internally, reports a Sri Lankan daily.
“We are disappointed that such issues which have no relevance to this issue have been dragged into this report, “ the Daily Mirror quoted the government as saying.
Sri Lanka was named amongst 20 other countries of concern in a United Nations report on sexual violence in conflict, published on Thursday.

The list included the Central African Republic, Democratic republic of Congo, Mali South Sudan, Syria and others.

The report identified 34 armed groups which included rebels and government security forces that were responsible for sexual violence in conflict. The report also linked sexual violence with the gain and control of territories.

Echoing calls from the report, the UN Special representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, called on the international community to act on the reports findings.

"The UN calls on the countries in question and the international community, to ensure that men, women and children who are victims of sexual violence, and children born of rape get the assistance they need," said Zainab Bangura.
