The leader of the Paattali Makkal Katchi, a party in the Tamil Nadu ruling coalition, urged the Indian government to work towards strengthening the draft resolution on Sri Lanka, tabled at the UNHRC this week.
The party leader, S Ramathas, stressed the need for India to strengthen the current draft resolution, and ensure that an international mechanism into war crimes and crimes against humanity and genocide took place.
Commenting on the resolution, Ramthas outlined that despite welcoming the UN Human Rights Chief’s calls for an international investigation, the resolution only called for an investigation through the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Reiterating the need for an international investigation he said,
“It has been 5 years since the Tamil genocide happened, and the perpetrators have not been brought to justice. The Tamils face continuous intimidation in the North-east so the right thing to do is to hold an international investigation into not only war crimes, but into genocide.”
