Northern Provincial Council representative returns from UNHRC

The Northern Provincial Councillor, Aanthy Sasitharan, who received the second highest number of votes in the elections, commented on of her recent visit as a representative of the Northern Provincial Council to United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), in Sri Lankan press today.

Sasitharan, outlined that she had stressed the problems faced by war-affected women and children to international human rights organisations and diplomats during her visits, and also highlighted disingenuous presidential commissions.

Speaking on her visit she said,

“I explained to the human rights organisations and the diplomatic officials that the Presidential Commission to Probe Disappearances is an eye wash.

“We have filed a writ of habeas corpus on behalf of missing persons. The State Counsel in the case is an adviser to the Presidential Commission to Probe Disappearances. Therefore we doubt the impartiality of the Commissions.”

“I also went as a representative of those who had handed over their relatives to security forces during the end of the war.”

Sasitharan reiterated that her visit was due to a unanimous decision by the Northern Provincial Council to send a representative  to the UNHRC in Geneva.
