SL ‘over-sensitive’, world ‘over-active’ - India

India’s External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has called on Sri Lanka not to isolate itself, over global pressure on war crimes and accountability, while speaking to a group of Sri Lankan journalists in New Delhi on Wednesday.

“Sri Lankans will have to find means to satisfy the world, while convincing the world that it needs more time to find its own solution at a pace and in a time frame convenient to it,” Khurshid said, adding that although it was understood that a 30-year conflict cannot be solved overnight, Sri Lanka cannot take 30 years to bring about reconciliation.

When asked about India’s stance on the resolution, Kurshid said that Sri Lanka should act in a manner which would enable India to help it, and called for moderation, as Sri Lanka is “over-sensitive” while the world is “over-active”.

Kurshid couldn’t shed light on to what India’s position would be, saying that India’s parliamentary election campaigns will have an influence on Delhi’s policy.

“We are in an election mood. In election time it is not always easy to explain to people. There is no time and no willingness to listen to things. And lots of people get excited and sometimes get upset.”
