Hundreds of people from the Tamil community in the Greater Toronto Area came together on Sunday September 15th, for the 5th Annual Tamil-Canadian Walkathon at the Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough. An impressive $50,000 was raised in total.

The charity walk, organised by the Canadian Tamil Congress, was dedicated to the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, in order to raise awareness, promote further research and education, and provide support for children with special needs and their families.

Speaking to Tamil Guardian, Dr. Priya Jaganathan, a board member of CTC explained that they wanted to "bring attention to a worthy cause, raise funds, and build bridges between communities."

Officer K. Kathiravelu of Toronto Police Services told Tamil Guardian,
"It's my second time at the Annual Tamil-Canadian Walkathon, I came to support the community, take part in the walk, and promote the employment booth for younger generations; because policing is a great job and I would recommend it for anyone."

When asked why she had participated in the Walkathon, Blackcy Placidass, Addictions Specialist told Tamil Guardian,
"After many years of education and experience in the health services field, I would like to use my resources and provide knowledge and support for the Tamil community."

Whilst Arun Nageswaren, a representative of Kokuvil Hindu College said he was "showing support for the community, because it is for a good cause and as Tamil-Canadians, we are productive members of society."
