The UK Tamil Students Union (UKTSU) held a workshop last week to raise awareness about health issues within the Tamil community.
The event in Ilford saw many members of the public attend to get advice from Tamil doctors and medical students.

This pilot event focussed on Diabetes, a condition that afflicts a relatively large proportion of the Tamil community.
“It was incredible to see our ideas come into fruition with the level of satisfaction you can only get from medicine and community service. It was inspiring to give something back to the community and hone our Tamil language skills at the same time” said Dr. Karan, one of the coordinators of the project.

Members of UKTSU also provided eye checks, blood pressure and BMI checks.
The young doctors gave diet and lifestyle advice specific to Tamils.
“This is a much needed project, especially as many of our community members with the disease have limited English, and face a language barrier at their regular consultations. I am impressed with the resolve of the youth involved and would like to see more of these events in the future.” said Selvarajah Sellathurai, the owner of the Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple, which hosted the event.
