Canadian Tamil youth #Remember83

Photographs YUTSA

Remembering the pogrom of Black July 1983, the Tamil Youth Organisation Canada and Tamil students at the York University Tamil Student's Association (YUTSA) ran a social media campaign to remember the massacre of '83.

Stating that "scars are never forgotten", YUTSA encouraged fellow Tamil youth to send twitter and facebook messages with the phrase #Remember83 as well as write the phrase on their hands and post in photographs of their act of remembrance.

The hashtag enables it to become a searchable entity on social media sites, that users can then track as a 'trend'.

The campaign has received widespread support, including from the largest Canadian Tamil student body - CTYA (Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance).
