A Sri Lankan army soldier has been arrested for sexually harassing a schoolgirl in the Murunkan area of Mannar last week.

The incident occurred while the schoolgirl was travelling on a state-run bus from the Madhu area to her school in Murunkan. During the journey, she was reportedly subjected to sexual harassment by the army personnel.

Following the incident, the student filed a complaint at the occupying Sri Lankan police station in Murunkan. Police subsequently arrested the soldier in connection with the complaint.

Authorities have confirmed that further investigations into the incident are currently underway.

The arrest has once again raised concerns about the continued presence and conduct of Sri Lankan security forces in the Tamil North-East, particularly in close proximity to schools and other public institutions.
