Tamil Genocide Monument in Canada vandalised, suspects arrested

The Tamil Genocide Monument in Chinguacousy Park, Brampton, was targeted in two “deliberate and reprehensible” acts of vandalism this week, drawing condemnation from the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) and prompting arrests by Peel Regional Police.

On the morning of June 15, 2025, most of the lighting fixtures illuminating key elements of the memorial were found destroyed. This marks the second such incident in recent weeks, with a similar attack having taken place on May 27, 2025. Following an investigation involving surveillance footage, Peel Police confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the vandalism.

The NCCT condemned the attacks as “deliberate and continuous attempts to target the Tamil Genocide Monument” and warned that they form part of a broader campaign of Tamil genocide denial and distortion. “Such acts of intolerance and hate seek to erase painful histories and further exacerbate the trauma of the Tamil people,” said the organisation in a statement.

The vandalism “not only disrespects the memory of the victims of the Tamil Genocide but also undermine the values of truth, reconciliation, and mutual respect that are foundational to our diverse Canadian society,” it continued. The NCCT urged the Peel Regional Police and the City of Brampton to pursue a full investigation and ensure that those responsible are held to account.

The council also reassured the public that the primary structure of the monument remains intact and continues to serve as a vital space for remembrance and education. “It also allows us to share our painful traumatic experiences and to educate our fellow Canadians about the Tamil Genocide,” said the NCCT.

The organisation went on to warn that the Sri Lankan state has for years engaged in “deliberate, aggressive, covert and overt foreign interference” in Canada, attempting to undermine Tamil advocacy efforts. Tamil Canadians were urged to remain vigilant, report any threats to local law enforcement, and continue to “stay engaged and provide ongoing support efforts to combat Tamil Genocide denial and distortion in Canada and internationally.”

The Tamil Genocide Monument has become a significant symbol in the Tamil people’s long-standing pursuit of international recognition and accountability for the genocide committed by the Sri Lankan state.
