University of Jaffna students commemorated the Tamil genocide on campus yesterday to mark the third day of Mullivaikkal Remembrance Week.

The students gathered at a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Tamil genocide and observed a moment of silence before laying flowers in their memory.

The monument on campus was built in April 2021 after it was bulldozed by the Sri Lankan authorities earlier that year. The destruction sparked widespread outrage in the North-East and across the world, with international politicians condemning the act.

The students also distributed kanji at Kalviyankadu junction. Tamils in the North-East and in the diaspora serve kanji during Mullivaikkal remembrance week and on Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day to remember the plight of the Tamils trapped in No Fire Zones in the final months of the armed conflict.
