Sri Lankan army accused of protecting fishermen involved in illegal activities

Sri Lankan soldiers have been accused of providing protection for fishermen who have been involved in illegal activities in Mullaitivu, after police fired tear gas at demonstrators this week.

As a group of fishermen accused of partaking in illegal fishing attempted to attack protestors who had been demonstrating against them, tear gas was fired and Sri Lanka’s Special Task Force was deployed earlier this week.

In the aftermath of the clashes, which saw at least one person hospitalised, Sri Lankan soldiers were reportedly accused of providing shelter to the group engaged in the illegal fishing. Soldiers were seen escorting them in their military vehicles.

Tamil fishermen have been protesting against the illegal fishing activities, which has contributed to the hardships they are facing in the region.
