Shankar and Thileepan commemorated in Denmark

Remembrance events were held in two Danish cities last week, as Eelam Tamils commemorated the LTTE’s Lt. Col. Thileepan and Col. Shankar.

Poems were recited and flowers laid before portraits of both leaders, as a mark of respect for their sacrifice.

Thileepan, a political wing leader of the LTTE, fasted to death in a protest appealing to the Indian government to honour pledges made to the Tamil people. He began his fast on 15th September 1987, surrounded by over 100,000 supporters, and died 11 days later, on the 26th September 1987.

Shankar, the pioneer of the LTTE’s air force wing, was killed in an attack carried out by a deep penetration unit of the Sri Lankan army in the Vanni on September 26, 2001.
