Marking the international day of the disappeared, British Tamils took to the streets of London staging a protest in Trafalgar Square and calling on the British Prime Minister to deliver justice for the Tamil Families of the Disappeared.
During the demonstration, Tamils re-enacted the infamous white van abductions which were used to disappear critical journalists, dissidents and Tamil youth. Sri Lanka’s former President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was reportedly behind these abductions.
The protesters also delivered a petition signed by the Association for Relatives of the Enforced Disappearances-North & East Provinces to the No.10 Downing Street, the residence of the British Prime Minister.
The letter slammed the previous Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena for falling to abide by his pledge to deliver justice for the families of the disappeared and stressed the need for international action.
The Tamil Families of the Disappeared have protested for over 2,000 days demanding to know what happened to their loved ones. 138 parents have died without knowing the fate of their loved ones.
