Tamil Nadu has donated humanitarian supplies worth around Rs. 3.4 billion to Sri Lanka to help combat the ongoing economic crisis that has ravaged the island.

Sri Lanka has been facing an economic crisis that has left civilians without essentials like food, fuel, and medicine. The economic crisis has also facilitated a political crisis that has brought further instability to the island.
The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Gopal Baglay, handed over an estimated Rs. 3.4 billion in humanitarian aid which was provided by Tamil Nadu.
The donation was received by Ministers Ali Sabry and Keheliya Rambukwella. Member of Parliament Jeevan Thondaman as well as Ceylon Worker’s Congress leader Senthil Thodaman were also present at the event.
This is the third humanitarian donation made by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The donation consisted of 16,594 MT of rice, 200 MT of milk powder, and around 38 MT of medicine.
The Tamil Nadu government has so far donated 40,000 MT of rice, 500 MT of milk powder, and more than 100 MT of medicines. In a tweet, the Indian High Commission stated that all the donations from Tamil Nadu amount to “around USD 22 million.”

The Indian High Commission added that the “coming together of people and Government of India towards the cause underscores the abiding people to people connect between India and Sri Lanka and the mutual care and concern for each other.”
