The UK announced that it "supports a timely, peaceful, and democratic process, according to the constitution, to address ongoing developments" in Sri Lanka as protesters breach the prime minister's office.
"Over the course of this transition, we call all parties to respect the rule of law, the right to peaceful protest, and refrain from damaging private and public property," British High Commisioner Sarah Hulton added.
Following news that Sri Lanka's President has fled to the Maldives, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka's Prime Minister, has been appointed President and declared a state of emergency to quell protests which have broken out across the capital.
Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena made the announcement of Wickremesinghe's appointment to the highest office in the land, explaining that given Rajapaksa has fled, Wickremesinghe will act as a temporary president, as per parliamentary rules.
