Aruni Wijewardane, a career civil servant, has been appointed Sri Lanka’s new foreign secretary replacing a former Navy admiral Jayanath Colombage, who stands accused of overseeing the Illegal detention and torture site known as “Gota's Camp” within the Trincomalee Naval Complex.
Wikewardane was appointed as the secretary with effect from 20 May. She had served for 34 years in Sri Lanka’s foreign service. She has served as the Sri Lanka Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, Sri Lanka High Commission in Malaysia and the Sri Lanka Embassy in the Philippines. She also served as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Austria and the Permanent Representative to UN Organisations in Vienna.
The move follows international condemnation of the Rajapaksa administration over his appointment of former military officials, who stand accused of overseeing serious abuses, the senior cabinet positions.
