The Association of Relatives of the Disappeared in the North East began a three day rally from Pottuvil in the East, towards Mullivaikkal to commemorate the tens of thousands of Tamils massacred in Mullivaikkal by the Sri Lankan state 13 years ago.
Tamils marched from Pottuvil through Thirukovil, Akkaraipattu, Karai Island, Kalmunai, Kaluvanchikudi and ended at Kallady bridge for the day.
The rally will reach Mullivaikkal on May 18, also known as 'Tamil Genocide Day', where Tamils in the homeland will gather to remember the victims of the Mullivaikkal massacre.
As a part of Mullivaikkal Remembrance Week, Tamils in the North-East have been serving kanji - a porridge of rice and water. Kanji was the only food available to Tamils trapped in the Sri Lankan government declared 'No Fire Zones' as food, medicines and other necessities were heavily restricted from entering the Vanni during the final phase of the armed conflict.
