Speaking to a group of Provincial Council and Local Government representatives of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, rejected growing calls to resign.
“I will not step down. They can remove me, but I will not resign nor will I flee in fear,” he told the assembly.
Rajapaksa’s statement comes amidst widespread protests demanding the resignation of all Rajapaksa members from the cabinet. The call for his resignation has also resonated with members of the former supportive SLPP.
“Step by step we are finding solutions to the economic problems faced by the country. The IMF, the World Bank, and friendly countries have come forward to help us,” he tried to reassure the audience.
He further added that he had spoken with the Chinese Prime Minister on the topic of debt restructuring.
