A Sri Lankan solider photographed Tamils in Jaffna this morning as more signatures were added to a petition calling on Sri Lanka to repeal the notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
The petiton was launched last week as Sri Lanka's widely criticised 'counter-terrorism' legislation has come under international scrunity in recent weeks.
Last month, the state announced a series of proposed reforms but have been slammed by Tamil civil society and human rights organsiations for falling short of international standards. Despite multiple pledges, Sri Lanka has failed to repeal the draconian legislation which has been disproportionately used against Tamils and Muslims, faciliating arbitrary detention, torture and other degrading treatment.
