Sri Lankan police officer makes a call and drunk driver is waved through

Outrage has been sparked on social media, after a video emerged of a senior Sri Lankan police officer instructing his colleague to allow a visibly inebriated driver to continue driving along the Southern Expressway.

The video, first published by Ada Derana this morning, was filmed by the junior officer and shows him stopping a visibly drunk driver who is seated in his vehicle at the Imaduwa Interchange on the Southern Expressway.

The man, who is yet to be identified, proceeds to call a senior police officer on his mobile phone who then instructs the junior officer on duty to allow the man to continue his journey.

Speeds of up to 100km/h can be reached on the expressway.

Many users on social media have commented on how this incident is the latest example of Sri Lankan police corruption.
