Sri Lankan government says no evidence of troops intentionally killing civilians

Sri Lanka's Health Minister, Rajitha Senaratne, said the government had no evidence of Sri Lankan troops killing Tamil civilians during the war.

Senaratne claimed that people were killed in the crossfire but there is no evidence to show that civilians were directly targeted.

Senaratne said the government rejected the "Darusman Report" on Sri Lanka which accused the Sri Lankan military of intentionally killing Tamil civilians. The "Darusman Report" was produced in 2011 by a panel of experts appointed by former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and headed by Marzuki Darusman.

The Panel found credible allegations associated with the final stages of the war:

'Between September 2008 and 19 May 2009, the Sri Lanka Army advanced its military campaign into the Vanni using large-scale and widespread shelling, causing large numbers of civilian deaths. This campaign constituted persecution of the population of the Vanni.'

The Sri Lankan government rejected this report, calling it fundamentally flawed.
