Sri Lankan military organises volleyball tournament for schoolchildren in Mullaitivu

The Sri Lankan army organised a volleyball tournament in a Mullaitivu school playground last week, as the military continues to intrude on civilian life in the Tamil North-East.

Soldiers from the 64 Division organised the tournament at the Oddusudan school playground, which reportedly involved at least 12 school teams from the local area.

The commander of the Sri Lankan security forces in Mullaitivu was present at the tournament, alongside several other senior military officers.

The tournament is yet another example of the Sri Lankan military’s continued involvement in civilian life in the Tamil North-East. In recent years troops have also stepped up their presence in Tamil schools in particular. Tens of thousands of soldiers remain stationed in the district.
