Canadian politicians from across the political spectrum released statements to praise the country’s Tamil community this weekend, as many Tamils around the world celebrated Puthandu.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in his statement to mark the occasion,
“As Tamil Canadians celebrate, let us all take time to learn about the rich heritage of their communities and recognize their important contributions to our country. Our diversity is a source of strength, and helps make Canada one of the best places in the world to call home”.
His statement was echoed by Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism Pablo Rodriguez, who added that the festival “is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about the culture and traditions of the Tamil community in Canada and their important contributions to our society”.
Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, also issued a statement, saying,
“I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the vast and vibrant contributions of Tamils in shaping our great country”.
