Militarisation: Sri Lankan army involves itself in cleaning up a church

The Sri Lankan military decided to take part in renovating a church in Kilinochchi earlier this year, as criticism over the armed forces’ involvement in civil activities continues.

Troops from the 574 Brigade, which was established in 2011, held a ‘Shramadana’ campaign at the St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Kilinochchi. During the armed conflict, the church had been damaged in bombing raids conducted by the Sri Lankan military.

The military's attempt to “beautify the church” – as reported by an official military website – comes amidst sustained criticism of the Sri Lankan armed forces’ who continue to be involved in civilian life in the North-East.

The military has heavily involved itself with almost all aspects of life in the North-East, including religion. During major Hindu and Christian festivals, the military has overseen festivities, whilst also ensuring it has a continued presence in places of worship.
