The European Union (EU) has raised the threat of sanctions against those who obstruct peace efforts in Libya, reports Reuters, after a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels.
"Those responsible for violence and those who obstruct or undermine Libya's democratic transition must face consequences for their actions," they said in a joint statement.
Reuters reported seeing a confidential document drawn up the EU’s diplomatic service last month, which set out of a range of measures including a full oil embargo. Visa bans and asset freezes against individuals are also reported to be options that could be taken.
The EU ministers also condemned any action that may deprive "the Libyan people of the benefits of the sustainable development of their economy," pointing to key financial institutions and oil companies.
"The EU believes that the independence and proper functioning of the Central Bank of Libya, National Oil Corporation and other key financial institutions must be preserved and protected," it said.
