Turkey has called for a meeting of Nato members to consult over its response to the downing of one of its fighter jets by Syria.
"Turkey has requested consultations under Article 4 of Nato's founding Washington Treaty," Nato spokesperson Oana Lungescu told Reuters.
"Under article 4, any ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened."
Syria says the jet was shot down on Saturday after it entered its air space. Syrian officials claimed it shot down an ‘unidentified’ aircraft while it was in its airspace, however Turkey has denied this.
The Turkish Foreign Minister Agmed Davutoglu says the fighter jet ‘momentarily’ entered Syrian airspace by mistake, however it was shot down over international waters.
"According to our conclusions, our plane was shot down in international airspace, 13 nautical miles (24km) from Syria," he said.
UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said the Syria’s actions were "outrageous" and stressed "how far beyond accepted behaviour the Syrian regime has put itself".
"It will be held to account for its behaviour. The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council," he said.
