UN names Congo war crimes suspects

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has named five Congo rebel leaders as war crimes suspects that need to be apprehended.

In a statement released earlier this week, Pillay said,
“The leaders of the M23 figure among the worst perpetrators of human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, or in the world for that matter.”
"Every effort must be made to hold these men, and the soldiers under their command, accountable for human rights violations committed against civilians, both for crimes committed within the context of the current mutiny, and also for offences committed previously."
Amongst those named was Bosco Ntaganda a former general in the Congolese Army, who until April of this year enjoyed protection from UN peacekeeping forces, despite having an ICC warrant for his arrest issued in 2006.

Ntaganda defected from the army earlier this year with hundreds of followers in a mutiny and remains at large.
