Wigneswaran meets EU delegation, stresses need for international participation on accountability in Sri Lanka

The Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council CV Wigneswaran stressed the need for international participation in any further accountability and investigation process into Sri Lanka’s mass atrocities during a meeting with the a delegation of the European Union Political Affairs on Monday.

During a meeting with the head of the delegation Mr Paul Coutry, the chief minister added that statements made by the current government had made clear that any internal inquiry conducted by Sri Lanka would mainly focus on protecting and vindicating those that are accused of war crimes instead of serving justice.

Mr Wigneswaran added that Sri Lanka’s government had made several statements that back tracked on commitments it made by co-sponsoring the United Nations resolution on accountability , justice and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting Mr Wigneswaran added that he highlighted the ethnic discrimination in Sri Lanka’s judiciary, stating,

“I have been in Sri Lanka’s judiciary for many years. I conveyed to the European Union delegation regarding how ideas of discrimination in the liens of ethnicity exist in Sri Lanka’s judiciary and are implemented.”
