‘We don’t need your money, we want our children back’ – Tamil families of disappeared take their protest to Colombo

More than 150 relatives of men, women and children who have been forcibly disappeared by the Sri Lankan state came to Colombo today, where they demonstrated outside the United Nations office in the capital and continued to call for justice.

The protestors, mainly led by Tamil women from across the North-East, descended on the Sri Lankan capital to reject an offer that was supposedly laid out by the government to offer death certificates and Rs. 200,000 (approximately US$550) in compensation for their disappeared loved ones.

“You keep your Rs. 200,000 and we will pay you Rs.500,000 if you tell us what you did to our children," said one mother.

The Tamil families have been protesting continuously on the roadsides of the North-East for years, demanding answers. Several have passed away since the protests began, never having lived to know what happened to their children.

To date, no one has been held accountable for the disappearances of their loved ones.
