US Congressman Herb Conaway has expressed his support for Tamil self-determination, as Tamils across the world commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Mullivaikkal genocide.
“Alongside Tamil Americans in New Jersey and across the United States, I honour the memory of the tens of thousands of Tamils who were killed or forcibly disappeared during Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict,” said Congressman Conaway in a statement this week.
“We continue to advocate for a just and lasting political solution based on Tamil self-determination.”
His statement comes amid global events marking the 2009 genocide in Mullivaikkal, where tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were killed by Sri Lankan state forces during the final months of the armed conflict. While Colombo continues to deny these atrocities, calls for justice and a long-term political resolution remain central to Tamil remembrance efforts.
Congressman Conaway’s endorsement of Tamil self-determination adds to a growing chorus of political voices in the United States and internationally who have recognised the need for a solution that addresses the Tamil people’s longstanding political aspirations.
