UK and US express ‘solidarity’ with Rauf Hakeem

The British and American envoys to Sri Lanka met with the leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauf Hakeem this week, where he says they expressed “solidarity”.

“Had the pleasure of being spoken to by both HE British High Commissioner @SarahHultonFCO and HE Ambassador Alaina Teplitz, this morning,” tweeted Hakeem yesterday. “Thank you for inquiring into many matters of concern & expression of solidarity.”

“The 2 Heads of Missions also inquired after the support to fight #COVID?19, & discussed the need to uphold rule of law also shared experiences of other countries successfully countering extreme exigencies in compliance with the democratic principles and pluralist sensitivities,” he continued.

Sarah Hulton, Britain’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, also tweeted that it was “great to speak to civil society and community leaders this week”.

“Lots to talk about, including the urgent need to tackle #disinformation and #hatespeech – vital to maintaining unity and strength during these difficult times,” she added.
