Former Member of Parliament and Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) candidate for the Valvettithurai Urban Council, M.K. Shivajilingam, stated that the people have entrusted them with a mandate to govern themselves.
He emphasized that the public has now realized the mistake of trusting the JVP’s alluring promises during both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
The Tamil National People's Front, contesting under the bicycle symbol, secured victories in 7 out of 9 wards in the Valvettithurai Urban Council.
Responding to inquiries about this electoral success, Shivajilingam explained that the Tamil people had sent a definitive message through the local government election. According to him, voters had decisively turned towards Tamil political parties, realizing the consequences of their previous choices.
He noted that although voter turnout was relatively low, those who were rejected by the people were making their way back through proportional representation. He emphasized that the people were not indifferent but remained vigilant and politically aware.
Shivajilingam stressed the need for all parties to unite and apply collective pressure to achieve a resolution to the longstanding ethnic issue. He regarded the election outcome as an endorsement for self-rule and affirmed that the TNPF's political journey would continue.
He further stated that the party’s goal extended beyond merely forming council administrations; it also aimed to collaborate with other Tamil parties to build a united front in the pursuit of a just solution to the national ethnic question.
