The leader of the Tamil National Alliance met with the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka earlier this week to discuss “reconciliation and constitutional reform”.
Ambassador Keshap tweeted a photograph from the meeting on Friday, saying he was “honoured” to meet the TNA leader R Sampanthan.
The meeting comes as Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena pledged not to allow foreign involvement in an accountability mechanism, that is to be set up under a UN resolution on reconciliation passed last year.
Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.
