Tamil National Alliance MP MA Sumanthiran said that he and fellow party member Shanakiyan Rasamanickam had been followed by a Sri Lankan intelligence officer as they left for a meeting in Colombo, labelling the move “a threat to our lives”.
Speaking in parliament Sumanthiran spoke of how an unidentified man had followed them on motorbike as they left parliament on Wednesday.
After reporting the incident to the Cinnamon Gardens Police, Sumanthiran states they were informed by Sri Lankan police officers that “this was an intelligence officer who had been detailed to follow us”.
The motorbike had been issued a license plate from the Eastern Province, he added.
“Coming and going from Parliament is covered by parliamentary privilege,” continued Sumanthiran, as he called for “immediate action… as we regard this a threat to our lives”.

According to Police, an intelligence officer had been detailed to follow @ShanakiyanR & myself. This is a violation of our @ParliamentLK privileges. Why are intelligence officers detailed to follow Opposition MPs? - @MASumanthiran #SriLanka #SLnews #Colombo pic.twitter.com/N7s7KwITtb
