A Tamil woman has been murdered at her home in Kondavil, Jaffna this week, with Sri Lankan police reportedly launching a murder investigation into her death.
According to reports, the woman was found with her throat slit by the back entrance of her home.
She has been identified as 61-year-old Chandra Thesi of Neddilipai, Kondavil.
Thesi had been living alone at the house, when her body with her clothes torn, was discovered on Monday.
Sri Lanka’s Kopay Police and forensic investigators were at the scene and reportedly discovered a small knife nearby.
Her body has been sent to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for an autopsy.
The murder in Jaffna comes despite the presence of Sri Lankan troops in the region, which have occupied the peninsula for more than 20 years. Though a decade has passed since the end of the armed conflict, tens of thousands of Sri Lankan troops are stationed across the North-East, with illicit drug use, alcoholism and crime continuing to plague the regions.
