Subramaniyam Bhaskaran, a Tamil journalist, was assaulted by two individuals from Kilinochchi, reportedly for his involvement in exposing corruption.
The Kilinochchi journalist reportedly uncovered confidential documents exposing corruption within the Iranaimadu Farmers’ Federation, an organisation accused of operating without proper registration or transparency.
Through the Right to Information Act, it was revealed that the federation, which has not restructured its administrative framework since 2017, has been functioning without registration under the Director of the Community Development Authority. Furthermore, Rs. 37 million allocated for the Iranaimadu farmers was allegedly misappropriated, with the funds being spent without proper accounting instead of being distributed among the farmers
.
The journalist highlighted that one of the assailants involved in a recent attack on him is the son of the federation’s treasurer, while the other is reportedly the son of another member of the organisation. This connection raises serious concerns about intimidation tactics being employed to silence criticism and scrutiny of the federation's activities.
The journalist further underscored the persistent threats faced by media professionals in Kilinochchi, particularly those investigating corruption and illegal activities such as sand mining. Citing the recent case of journalist Murukaiah Thamilchelvan, he stated, “There is no freedom for the media here in Kilinochchi.” Despite these threats, civilians continue to lodge complaints with journalists, particularly regarding the federation’s repeated failure to provide funds intended for them.
Bhaskaran, the journalist who exposed the corruption, alleged that “mafia” groups are behind these threats, attempting to suppress information that could expose their illegal activities. He described these efforts as part of a broader strategy to intimidate and silence journalists in the region.
Following the attack on Bhaskaran’s house, two police officers arrived at the scene to investigate. A formal complaint was lodged against the assailants, and the officers documented the damages to the journalist's property. Subsequently, the two attackers were arrested and are currently in police custody.
